Reflection part four

I wrote this a while ago in my journal so it may not be the best piece of writing ever, and it may not be continued. It just happens to be a high school romance so, brace your selves!

Prologue

She took a quick glance into the school bathroom mirror. What? She looked again, wide-eyed. The face in the metal frame was not Robyn. Robyn had caramel, shaggy hair parted to the side and clipped up with a white pin. Her eyes were luminous green on her peachy skin and blush colored lips.

The face in the mirror had deep, dark, walnut colored hair that pulled back by a leather headband, and tied into a high ponytail that was maneuvered into a braid.  The skin on this bust was ever so pale, and the mouth was beige. But most queer of all, was that they- Robyn and the mysterious face- both had the same eyes; the color, the little gray streak in the left side of the pupil on the right eye, the same long lashes that shielded their eyes.

Robyn tore her gaze away, sucked in her breath, and dared a glance back at the cursed, school bathroom mirror. She glanced away, but then snapped her head back.  But that’s- what- WHAT?! What is freaking going on! She saw the face of her dead brother, Kirk, staring back at her with brown, mournful eyes. He mouthed “twenty three”.

Chapter One: Black

Rebecca

I stumbled back to her third hour math not caring about if people bumped into me or accidentally shoved me away. I saw Kirk. No one had seen Kirk for three years. Three FREAKING YEARS and now he turns up in a mirror in a school bathroom?!

I walked into Mrs. Miller’s math hour, and roamed drowsily to my desk and shoved all my binders  under my chair. Mrs. Miller rambled on about how sophomores like us started to learn about the Pythagorean algorithm, while I was thinking. Twenty-three? That was Kirk’s favorite number.

“All right, class. If x squared-2=(x+2)(x-2), then what is X? You have three minutes to calculate, class. Start!”

I already knew the answer: 23. I was in gifted so she had a slight advantage. So I just sat there, like stone. Veronica, my sister, who sat next to me, whispered, “It’s twenty-three right?”

I nodded.

She sighed. “I know, I know. You’re thinking of Kirk. But don’t let it stop you from living a good life. You know that, actually, something really creepy happened today. I looked in the mirror and saw-”

I snapped out of my thought and completed her sentence. “-A face totally different from your own?”

Veronica’s jaw dangled open. “Yeah! And then I looked back and saw-”

“-Kirk?” I whispered?

“Yes.”

“CLASS! Are you done? Because from what I see, only Robyn, Veronica, Nick, Lila, and Mister Jerald Pfeffer completed. If you don’t finish, it’s-”

“RR-RRI-RING!RING RING!” The class bell rang and all the students rushed to get out before Mrs. Miller said Homework.

Chapter 2: Animation

Veronica

Since we’re twins, Robyn and I have the same classes together. We both walked to Pod 4.5, Row 23 and went to our lockers. We have this kind of telepathic signature, where if we concentrate hard enough, we can psychotically communicate. But only for ten minutes because we can suffer the temporary loss of one of our senses if we do it too long.

Do you think that the mirror thing was a coincidence?

No.

Then it’s some mysterious force, pulling at our minds?

No. Maybe we both telepathically were speaking for too long, so we

That can’t be! The senses are completely blocked out, not messed up.

We pulled out our computer Technology folders and walked down Corridor 19890 to Computer Tech.

Watcha guys talking about?

Oh. Did I forget to tell you? The only other person who can interfere with our telepathic conversions is Nick. What a perv. Personally, I think he’s cute, but Robyn finds him so…. annoying. ?????

Get out of  our minds! Robyn shot a look at him.

I was never in your minds, or was I? You two thinking About, Me? Nick smirked.

I silently giggled.

Shut the fudge up, or get creamed in dodgeball in Gym!

The three of us were still communicating as Mrs. Morris talked about our next animation project. We three? Yes? Were a group. Hooray. As our assignment, we had to build a story on top of our previous animation, and make a ten minute movie out of it. Our previous animation was 3 minutes long, and was about an enchanted promise land. Even creepier, the characters in the movie was what all three of us envisioned in the mirrors of the school bathrooms.

Get out of our minds! Robyn shot a look at him

I was never in your minds, or was I? You two thinking About, Me? Nick smirked. I actually saw something in the school bathroom mirror today. It was really creepy; I saw this sexified version of my face. and then I saw…. um…

Kirk? And Twenty-three? we both said.

I silently giggled

PAUSE

FAST FORWARD

We tried to use the new iMoviemaker app, but it was jacked up. “How are we supposed to get As now?” Robyn wailed, and she flopped onto the spinny chair like an invertabre.  “I can help,” Nick smirked, and wiggled his eyebrows, leaning in closer to Robyn. She pushed him away. “That’s okay….. I’m good… Hey, what’s this?”

A new document popped up. It was named “23”.

We exchanged glances of suspicion, as Robyn tentatively clicked the open button. Document 23 turned out to be a complete fifteen minute animation story, built on the previous one.

“Okay, that’s just creepy,” I said.

“Lets watch it!” Nick exclaimed. and reached over Robyn’s shoulder to take over the mouse.

It started as our little enchanted world, and then this boy comes. Wait, that’s Kirk….! The ‘us’ get into a violent fight with him and it turns out to be an evil…. thing that dies and morphs into this necklace with a crystalline teardrop pendant with engraved symbols.

Chapter 3: Lunch

Lila

Finally! Lunch. I ran to meet Robyn and Veronica in Corridor 19890 to walk to the commons for lunch. We talked about school and whatnot. But I felt that there was something they weren’t telling me.

We sat down at our table; table 3B. Here is the list of my spontaneous table mates: Nick, Micheal, Robyn, Veronica, me, Moni, YoKarr, and Finn. Fantastic group, they are. We piled our tray with pizza, potatoes, salad and the non-toxic mush they serve down in the Jim-Bob.

With our plates filled, we ate amid awkward silence. I believe that I was the only one noticing the angst and worry and retch of looks that Nick, Veronica, and Robyn were exchanging. I concentrated hard, so that a throbbing vein popped out in my temples, struggling to break the telepathic barrier that kept me from hearing the little conversation. Everyone else however, was staring at me. That was when I had realized how awkward it was to have a spoonful of mashed potatoes and brown rice halfway to my wide mouth with my eyes squeezed tight.

Hot Topic

Today Promethium and I went to the Oak park Mall. While Park Ranger was shopping on the other side of the mall, we went to some of Promethium’s favorite stores.

We toured many different stores on the journey to search for her destined store: wet seal. First Promethium took me to Hot Topic, a ‘cool bro’ store. There is dim lighting and the  latest hits booming on an extra-large stereo. On two of the dirty brick walls oodles and oodles of t-shirts hang because of the day-after-christmas sale. Promethium toured the store with me tailing behind.

There were large assortments of gages (Look those up), bracelets, and tons of other Randoms. Promethium offered to buy me a t-shirt of my choice. I looked upon the Walls of Hanging T-shirts, when I spotted the most epic shirts ever: The  Me Gusta face shirt and the Troll face shirt. (Look those up).

Although Promethium didn’t let me get either of those epic shirts, I got an even epicer t-shirt than that: GANGNAM STYLE!!

We left the store, satisfied, and continued to search for Wet Seal. Promethium dragged me into Abercrombie & Fitch. I refused to because there was a sick shirtless male model in front of the store. Ew.

We walked circles until we realized that Wet Seal was right next to Hot Topic. Wow.

Promethium was looking for printed jeggings. We couldn’t find any that she liked, so we ended up just aimlessly looking around. It was ridiculous. We looked at the belts, and we saw one with a shiny black surface. It flipped over and you know what was on that belt? YOU KNOW WHAT WAS ON THAT BELT? That’s right. A mustache. WHY?!?!?! (Look it up)

We ignored it, and we started to look at the shirts. I saw the back of one, and it was nice because it was pale and slightly lacey and opaque. I said, “Nice shirt. YOu should try it on!”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Turn it around and you will burn.”

So I turned it around and there it was; the most ridiculous thing in the world- Mustache. It went on for a long time; you’d see a pair of nice leggings on a manican, go to the shelf to get a pair, examine it, and realize There’s a mustache on the butt…. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUU-

This was a great experience! YOu guys should go see Hot topic when you go to the mall. It was so fun!

The Barrier ~ Part Five

A/N- Last chapter was a bit surprising, even for me…

Derek

NO. WAY. Andrew was SO going to get it. Lying and sending my little sister to jail like that…

Crossing my arms, I got some satisfaction from the fact that I was taller than him, and I hoped that I looked intimidating.

“So? What’s your lame excuse?” I asked.

To his credit, his eyes didn’t leave mine. “She would’ve died if I didn’t do that.”

“Oh yeah? And how would you know that? A little birdie told you?” I asked sarcastically.

“I’m serious! You know how I can like, sense when things will come right? Well, I umm…kinda saw the future, and there were two paths. I could send Lani to jail and have her live, or she could’ve stayed and died within the next twelve hours!”

Wow. He was a seriously accomplished liar. Of course I didn’t believe him!

“Liar. Get out of my sight before I kill you.” I snarled.

He turned and disappeared, probably leaving for Tian. Good riddance.

“Come on Rina, we still have to investigate and close the hole in Zhong.”

With a sigh, she followed me. And so we continued our journey in Zhong.

Rina wasn’t very talkative, so, sadly, that left me with plenty of time to think. Since I was still boiling with rage, I decided to review everything I knew about Tian, Zhong, and – gulp – Di.

So, apparently we’re all born with a power. I can manipulate the elements, like, changing the wind direction, controlling water, raising stones, etc. Rina can heal. Lani can sense emotions. Andrew…I preferred not to think about him then. My mom could talk to animals. Dad was able to make anything out of anything.

Anyway…from a young age we were able to use our powers, but over the course of the years we had to hone them to near perfection, so that we could pass the test that came when you were 14. Anytime during your 14th year, you could have to take the test. Of course, there was also school, which consisted of learning our history, math, controlling our powers, and other stuff.

I’ve always wanted wings. I know it’s not necessarily considered a ‘power’ but having wings would be awesome. Some people are even lucky enough to have wings. Like, it’s their ‘power.’ Okay, maybe I shouldn’t put it that way and just say that we’re all special, in a certain way.

We’re run by a government, but the King and Queen are at the top. King Alexander and Queen Elizandra are usually nice and fair, although every once in a while they can be quite harsh. They became bitter after their only daughter – A.M.Y. – was cast into Zhong.

My train of thought was interrupted when Rina  accidentally tripped over a hole in Zhong.

Without thinking, my hand shot out and grabbed her arm, steadying her. She smiled at me and said, “Thanks.”

Dang. That was the first time I’d seen her smile. I decided that I liked it, and I started trying to make her smile.

After about another hour, Rina was cracking up and I was smiling triumphantly.

***

This. Place. Had. Just. Become. A. Freaking. DESERT!! I was sweating like crazy, Rina had slowed down, and we were both extrememly hungry and thirsty.

How could I have forgotten to bring food with us? HOW? Well, I guess I was in a rush to get into Zhong…

“Uh, Derek? Do you have any water with you?” Rina asked hesitantly.

“No, but we could try looking around…” I replied.

She nodded, and we split up to look for some water. After a few minutes, I heard a low growling noise from behind me, but it sounded really far away, so I ignored it.

I searched for a long time without finding any water, and I started to get bored. So, when I found a nice cool rock to sit on, I sat on it and took a break.

I thought about some stuff, jumped from one thought train to another, and I got lost in my thoughts until I heard a scream. Jumping up, I saw, way off in the distance, a huge demon that looked somewhat like a dog/wolf/bear thing fighting a tiny figure. Since I couldn’t see who it was exactly, I ran closer to investigate, using the wind to help me. And then the thought struck me. WHY COULDN’T I JUST SUMMON SOME WATER FROM THE GROUND?! WHY DIDN’T I THINK OF THIS BEFORE?!

Oh well, no time to think about how stupid I’ve been. By now I was about 100 feet away, and the figures were starting to become clearer. The demon, called Canezzlote, was about the size of three bears stacked on top of each other, and about two bears wide. And the tiny figure was becoming more distinct, and, to my horror, I realized that it was Rina. She was doing pretty well for fighting such a huge creature, but I knew that she couldn’t hold out much longer.

At this time I was nearly close enough to attack it, but my aim wasn’t at its best, and I was afraid that I might hit Rina. Running even closer, I watched as the thing took a huge swipe at Rina, and she was too slow to dodge it. It hit her, and she went flying back for a second, then slammed into the ground hard enough to break a few bones. The Canezzlote lumbered toward her, and I knew instinctively that I wouldn’t be able to make it.

“Rina, get up!” I shouted at her, but she still lay motionless.

Before the Canezzlote reached her, he stopped in surprise and twisted around, attempting to look at its back. An arrow and a knife handle were protruding out of its back, and it thrashed around as its essence was sucked back into Di. However, I chose to ignore whoever it was that killed the beast, by now I was at Rina’s side.

Her eyes were still open, and I could see the pain in them.

“Rina. Heal yourself.” I told her.

“What – cough, cough – do you think I’m trying to do?” she snapped. And I could see that she was healing, but it would take another five minutes or so for her to heal completely.

A girl’s voice came from behind me. “Is she okay?”

I turned to see one of my friends and her twin sister, Maya and Kadence Walker. The one who asked was Maya, the other one Kadence.

“Yeah, she’s fine. Thanks for killing the Canezzlote. But why are you here, and how’d you get here?”

And Maya explained everything. They followed us into Zhong, saw the whole thing with A.M.Y., watched as Andrew chucked the knife away while we weren’t looking, seeing Lani get arrested, blah blah blah.

Finally she finished, and I got a chance to get a good look at them. Kadence was the one with the arrows, Maya the one with the knives. They were decked out in demon hunting gear, basically combat boots, leggings, and leather jackets. They both had brown hair and blue eyes, but Maya had forest green streaks in her hair, and Kadence had purple highlights.

While they were talking, Rina had completely healed, and she looked ready to go on. However, we still had the problem of food and water with us, and the water bottles Maya and Kadence had brought were nearly empty. And then I remembered that I needed to try pulling water from the ground. Turns out, it worked, and I filled Maya’s and Kadence’s water bottles, then had Rina and I drink as much as we could. It was refreshingly cold, and even though we didn’t have any food, we were still energized and ready to go on. So we did.
